Can Runtal Radiators Be Piped Together?

Absolutely. 

Runtal Radiators are commonly piped together in closed-loop hydronic heating systems and can often be integrated into existing fin-tube or baseboard systems without redesigning the entire home. 

This flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of hydronic panel radiators, especially in renovation and remodeling projects. 

The most common installation method is a series loop configuration, where hot water flows from one radiator to the next within the same heating zone. Runtal Radiators can be installed: 

  • along a single wall, 
  • across multiple walls, 
  • around corners, 
  • or throughout an entire zone. 

For optimal performance, Runtal recommends limiting a series loop to: 

  • a maximum of seven radiators, 
  • or approximately 30,000 BTUs total. 

This helps maintain balanced heat output and proper water temperature throughout the loop. 

One of the most common contractor questions is whether Runtal Radiators can be combined with existing fin-tube baseboard systems. The answer is yes. 

Runtal Radiators are frequently integrated into existing hydronic systems during renovations, allowing homeowners to upgrade key spaces without replacing every emitter in the house. 

However, proper system design is important. Traditional fin-tube systems are typically piped in ¾-inch copper and designed around higher flow capacity, while Runtal Radiators use ½-inch radiator connections and operate with different flow characteristics. 

Because of this, radiator placement within the loop matters. In many retrofit applications, installing Runtal Radiators near the end of the heating loop helps avoid restricting flow to downstream fin-tube baseboard. 

Another common solution is the use of monoflow diverter tees. A monoflow system diverts a portion of the water through the radiator while the remaining flow continues through the main loop. This approach can maintain proper system flow while allowing the radiator to operate effectively within the existing system. 

In addition to series loops, Runtal Radiators can also be installed using: 

  • monoflow systems, 
  • or parallel piping systems. 

Parallel systems provide individual supply and return connections to each radiator, allowing more even water temperatures across the system. 

Each piping method offers different advantages depending on the system layout, heat load, renovation constraints, and installation goals. 

As with any hydronic system, proper sizing, flow calculations, and piping design are essential for balanced performance and long-term efficiency.
