One of the most common questions we hear from contractors, homeowners, architects, and engineers is:
“Can I use Runtal radiators in a home that already has fin-tube baseboard or radiant heating, or do I need to replace the entire system?”
The short answer is yes Runtal radiators can absolutely be integrated into existing hydronic heating systems.

Many homeowners assume that because Runtal is a European-style radiator system, it only works in homes designed entirely around panel radiators. That’s simply not true. - copper fin-tube baseboard,
- radiant floor heating,
- cast-iron baseboard,
- towel warmers,
- and Runtal panel radiators
all within the same house.
Modern hydronic systems are often designed room by room based on comfort needs, heat output, and aesthetics. Runtal radiators operate differently than traditional fin-tube systems, so piping layout and flow characteristics need to be considered properly. For example, fin-tube systems commonly use ¾-inch piping, while Runtal radiators typically operate with ½-inch flow configurations.
Depending on the application, contractors may use:
- monoflow (diverter) tees,
- reverse return piping,
- or dedicated zones
to integrate panel radiators successfully.
That’s why proper system design and heat-loss calculations are important.
Hybrid systems have become increasingly popular because different heating emitters solve different problems. In some rooms, radiant floor heating alone may not provide enough output due to large glass areas, high ceilings, or significant heat loss.
